The best beach in Novi Vinodolski depends on the day you want. Lišanj gives you the most complete city-beach experience. Obala Petra Krešimira IV combines a long promenade with rocky swimming places and small coves. Povile slows the pace, while Klenovica and Smokvica make a short drive worthwhile for a village atmosphere.
The Novi Vinodolski Riviera extends for roughly 25 kilometres, and its coastline is not uniform. Pebbles, concrete terraces, natural rock and small hidden coves often appear within the same area. A beach that is excellent for an experienced swimmer may be awkward for a family with a pushchair.
This guide compares the main zones by access, shade, facilities and atmosphere. Seasonal services and parking rules change, so use it to choose an area, then confirm the details for your date.

Lišanj: the easiest all-round choice
Lišanj is Novi Vinodolski’s main city beach, immediately below Hotel Lišanj and close to the centre. It is the most straightforward choice when you want food, toilets, seasonal activities and different ways to enter the water without driving between coves.
The beach combines pebble, concrete sunbathing areas and some sand in the water. A green park zone provides valuable shade, although the best places fill quickly in July and August. Our own visits confirm the practical appeal: cafés line the beach, there are public facilities, and the parking area is directly connected to the resort zone.
Families often start here because the setting is easy to understand. However, “family-friendly” does not mean empty or silent. The beach becomes busy at the height of summer, music and water attractions add energy, and coarse pebbles still make water shoes useful.

Rivica and Pod Lopar: pebbles, shade and San Marino views
East of Lišanj, the beaches along Šetnica dr. Franje Tuđmana continue towards Lopar. Official tourism information groups parts of this shore as Rivica and Pod Lopar. The coast is mainly pebbly with some rocky sections, backed in places by trees and a landscaped promenade.
This is the classic shore for looking across to San Marino Islet. The small church appears close, and swimmers, SUPs, pedal boats and small craft share the water in summer. Reaching the islet is a separate open-water activity, not an ordinary extension of a beach swim.
The educational Fishermen’s Stories trail adds interest to a walk, while seasonal food, rentals and sports make some sections more serviced than they first appear. Exact facilities vary along the promenade, so look at the particular cove rather than assuming the whole zone is identical.
Choose Rivica or Pod Lopar for a scenic day with a promenade, shade and a view. Use the dedicated San Marino guide before planning a crossing.
Prva Dražica: a central mixed-surface beach
Prva Dražica is close to the centre and Marina Novi. Official information describes a renovated mix of concrete, rock and pebble, reached along an attractive waterfront route. Food and drink are nearby, and free Wi-Fi is advertised.
This makes it useful when you want a swim without committing to the larger Lišanj complex. It also fits a day that includes the town harbour, Marina Novi or the old centre.
The mixed shore means one entrance may suit a child while another is better for a confident adult. Inspect the exact spot before unloading everything. Confirm shade, toilets and accessibility on the day rather than treating the general beach description as a guarantee for every metre.
Choose Prva Dražica for a short central swim and an easy link with a town walk.
Obala Petra Krešimira IV: the best walk-and-swim coastline
West of the centre, Obala Petra Krešimira IV follows a long coastal road and promenade. Locally, many people still refer to this zone as Bribirska obala or Bribirska riva. The current official street name should be used for navigation.
Official sources describe about 1.3 kilometres of rocky shore, pebble coves and individual sunbathing spots. In practice, the strongest feature is choice: you can walk until a particular ladder, rock platform or small bay feels right.
This is not one uniform beach with one entrance and one row of facilities. Some spots use steps or ladders, some have coarse pebbles, and some are exposed rock. Pine shade appears along parts of the route, while cafés and restaurants make it easy to combine swimming with a long evening walk.
Vehicle access and seasonal parking barriers make the area convenient but not automatically free. Check the current tariff and remember that a small part of a new hour may be charged according to the operator’s rules.

The western resort beach and small coves
Continue beyond the main Obala Petra Krešimira IV section and the coast reaches the large resort area. The official tourism page currently refers to a Mövenpick Hotel & Residences Kvarner Bay beach and also mentions the Wyndham Grand complex, reflecting a period of branding and development changes.
The physical coastline is easier to describe than the commercial name: a sizeable pebble section is followed by smaller coves and rocky shore. The owner’s experience confirms that the attractive coastline continues beyond the promenade.
Sunbeds, umbrellas, cafés and bars are advertised, but construction and hotel operations may affect access and availability. Do not choose the area solely because an old resort page promises a particular service.
Choose this coast for a resort-style pebble beach and the option to keep walking towards smaller coves. Verify the active entrance and facilities before the trip.
Povile: multiple small beaches and a slower pace
Povile is a small coastal village about two kilometres south of Novi Vinodolski. Instead of one dominant beach, it offers pebbly, concrete and rocky sections around the harbour and along the settlement.
Our drone images show how closely the beaches, harbour and campsite connect. The setting feels compact and relaxed, with cafés close to the water and fewer urban distractions than Lišanj. Some places are affected by freshwater springs, making the sea feel unexpectedly cool even on a hot day.
Povile works well for travellers who like to inspect several entries and choose on arrival. The campsite coast adds another style of holiday, but facilities may belong to the campsite or a particular venue.

Mala Draga: the dog beach near Povile
The official dog beach is in Mala Draga cove, roughly one kilometre from Povile towards Klenovica. Local residents also know the cove and wider area as Tepli porat, which is also an official street name in Povile. A gravel access road descends below the main highway.
Official tourism information lists seasonal pedal boats, kayaks, a food-and-drink stand, shaded places and drinking water arranged for dogs. Those services should be confirmed, especially outside July and August.
This is the correct choice when travelling with a dog and wanting a beach that explicitly accommodates animals. It is not automatically the best general family beach: access, shade and the mix of dogs need to suit every member of the group.
Bring drinking water even if a dog fountain is advertised, follow the posted rules and clean up after your pet.
Klenovica: beaches beside a fishing village
Klenovica lies about nine kilometres south of Novi Vinodolski. Its coast combines pebble, concrete and rocky sections with a working fishing harbour, restaurants and a short waterfront walk.
The village setting is the main reason to choose it. Swim, see the boats and stay for fish or pizza rather than treating the location as a single isolated beach. The mountains behind the village give the shore a dramatic Kvarner backdrop.
Official pages advertise rentals and water activities, but our current archive does not yet document each entrance, toilet and shade area closely enough for a beach-by-beach ranking. That is why the existing Klenovica article remains a general village guide.
Choose Klenovica for a beach-and-harbour outing. Inspect the entry on arrival and check the wind before swimming.
Smokvica Krmpotska: a small family-friendly stop
Smokvica Krmpotska is farther south and much smaller than Novi Vinodolski. Its strongest photographed beach is a compact pebble cove with a relatively gentle-looking entry, a short promenade and a playground nearby. Rocky coves continue along the coast.
The appeal is simplicity. There is less choice of food and entertainment, so bring what you need and do not expect every service to operate. The beach can be a good stop for a family that values calm water and a small scale, but conditions must still be checked on the day.

Parking and timing
Parking is easiest to understand at the large central zones, but it is also most competitive there. Lišanj and Obala Petra Krešimira IV have managed parking areas; Povile, Klenovica and Smokvica rely on smaller village arrangements.
Never assume a space is free because the barrier is open or no machine is immediately visible. Read the sign, photograph the tariff and check whether payment rounds up to the next started period.
In July and August, arrive early for shade, a legal space and calmer water. June and September usually offer a better balance of warmth and space, but not every seasonal service will operate at full hours.
The Kvarner wind can change conditions quickly. A sheltered cove and an exposed rocky platform may behave very differently on the same day.
What to bring
For most beaches around Novi Vinodolski, pack:
- water shoes for coarse pebbles, rocks and ladders;
- drinking water even when a café is expected;
- sun protection and a portable shade option;
- cash or a working payment method for parking and small venues;
- a light wind layer outside peak heat;
- a dry bag for valuables;
- any child flotation equipment you normally use under active supervision.
Do not leave rubbish, block private access or place towels across working boat approaches.

Novi Vinodolski does not need one winning beach. Its advantage is variety within a short stretch of coast. Lišanj solves the practical family day, Rivica and Pod Lopar give the San Marino view, Obala Petra Krešimira IV turns swimming into a long walk, and the southern villages offer a slower rhythm.
Choose by the type of shore and day you want, not by a single ranking. Then follow the detailed guides for the exact entrance, parking and seasonal checks. That approach is more useful than calling every attractive cove “the best.”
